William Hubbart Obituary

William J.  Hubbart was born September 9th, 1936 in Blakely, Georgia to the late William Cowart and Neva Cowart. He departed his earthly home in the early morning hours on December 8th, 2025 at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

William was very passionate about his position as a long and short haul truck driver. He was known to many on the road as “Smoke Stack”, a name he carried with pride throughout his trucking career of over 60 years. Some of his happiest moments on the road were the conversations he shared with other truckers through his CB RADIO, where he built lasting friendships. He was employed by Perdue Farms (Accomac, Virginia), Glacier Trucking (Federalsburg, MD), CJ Prettyman (Exmore, Virginia) and C & E Farms, where he remained until his retirement. Although his trucking career required him to be away from home for extended periods of time, he always made time for his family.

William married Doris in August of 1987 and gained the family that he had always been desiring. Through their union, he lovingly embraced her four children as his own. Many years later his affection extended to his grandchildren and he cherished each of them with a proud and gentle heart. Williamwas affectionately known as “Poppop” by his loving grandchildren, who truly loved and adored him.

William’s hobbies and interests helped define his character. He enjoyed spending time with his family/friends, talking about the truck driver world, observing passersby, watching tv, eating good food and spoiling his children and grandchildren. His love for going to the local Dollar General was a great gift to him, that he shared with his grandchildren, leaving many memories that will never fade.

William is predeceased by his twin sister, Willie Mae Fields, brothers Wilkie Davis, Sherman Cowart and Charles Cowart.

He leaves to cherish his memories, wife Doris Hubbart, four children: Michelle Savage, Carlos Savage (Shannon), Contina Savage, Kimberly Savage; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 siblings: Daniel J. Cowart (CA) Annie Mae Barnes (Zeke) (GA); Brother-in-law: Lynwood Turner Jr (Leah); Sister-in-law: Kathy Bailey (Charles), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives who will miss him dearly.

His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by him.
