VIRGINIA LEE LAURA ALLEN SMITH was born on July 6, 1927 to the late Sarah Harris and Lieutenant Allen in Philadelphia, PA. During her youth, Virginia was raised by her father, an older sister, Mildred, and a host of aunts that adored her. She was educated in the public school system of Philadelphia, PA and Northampton County, Virginia. As a young woman, she decided to make the Eastern Shore her home. She lived with her aunt, Magnolia Brooks Spady of Cheriton, Virginia. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and attended the African Baptist Church in Cheriton, Virginia for several years. Through friends she was introduced to Percy Thomas Smith and the rest was history. They were wed and built a family. Through this union they proudly raised four children, Theodore, Magnolia, Percy, Jr. and William. She became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Treherneville, Virginia wehre she loved singing and working in the church's dining hall. Through the years Virginia worked on various farms as a laborer alongside her husband and later worked for various employers as a domestic. Regardless of the job she took pride in her work. In later years Virginia and Percy became members of the congregation of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Wardtown, Virginia. She thrived there as a member of the choir and as a Deaconess.
After the death of her husband, Percy, Virginia made the life altering decision to more to Wilingboro, New Jersey to be close to her daughter, Magnolia and her youngest son, William. In New Jersey Virginia opened up to a whole new world. She traveled with her daughter, learned and saw many things she never dreamed of and lived life to its fullest. She was a quiet yet strong woman that everyone seemed to gravitate toward.
She loved he family and her Church and cherished her friends. She touched many lives with her generosity and willingness to help those in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her hobbies included cooking, embroidery, search and find puzzles, singing old gospel hymns, putting together jigsaw puzzles and above all playing dominoes. She was the Queen of dominoes.
Following a brief illness, Virginia very peacefully departed this life on Thursday April 27, 2017 at the Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice Center, Mt. Holly, New Jersey. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter Magnolia Smith (Allen Smith) of Willingboro, New Jersey; two devoted sons, Percy T. Smith, Jr. (Florence) of Williamsburg, Virginia and William H. Smith (Kristen) of Riverside, California; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends from the Bridges Adult Day Care Center, Willingboro New Jersey, that she cheerfully attended daily.
Following the death of her beloved son, Theodore, Virginia always maintained a close relationship with her daughter-in-law Phyllis Allen. Her long time best friends were Mattie Marie Smith of Exmore Virginia and Gertrude Morris of Machipongo, Virginia; two special nieces, Christine Taylor of Whaleyville, Maryland and Sarah Mullen of Georgetown, Delaware held a special place in her heart.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Percy, her son, Theodore, her sister, Mildred Hite, and a brother, Lieutenant James Allen. She took care of everyone that she loved, she was always available to listen and give advice. Her life was that courage, vision, deep faith and abiding love of family and friends. Those who were lucky enough to know her will be forever blessed to have been a part of her life.
