Ms. Ruby L. Johnson Obituary

Ruby Louise Johnson was born on August 24, 1950 to the late Frances Smith-Duncan and James Johnson. Ruby was raised by Margaret Brooks of Painter, Virginia. Ruby transitioned from Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Ruby’s transition was the exact way she lived her life, quiet and peaceful.

Ruby possessed a loving, kind, and jovial spirit. She was a devoted mother to her son. She would often call her family just to make sure everybody was alright. Ruby exemplified love for her family. In her leisure time you could find her watching various channels such as, ID Channel, Cooking Channel, and Ruby loved Scooby-Doo.

Ruby was educated in the public schools of Accomack County and was a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School. She worked in the Accomack County School system as a cook. Ruby later became a CNA and worked for Hermitage Nursing Home in Onancock, Virginia and Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Nassawadox, Virginia until her retirement in 2015.

Ruby was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. She served on the senior choir, Jeffery L. Smith Gospel Choir, and on the Pastor’s Aide ministry. Whenever there was a service going on you could count on Ruby’s presence. She always took her big brother John to his doctors appointments and she reminded him faithfully to take his medicine.

She was preceded in death by her son, Torrary Johsnon, her mother, Frances Duncan, her father, James Johnson, a niece, Vernita Poulson and a sister-in-law, Mary Duncan.

To Cherish Ruby’s precious memories; a son, Brandon Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Mary (Leonard) Poulson of Hampton, Virginia, Dorothy (Albert) Chisum of New Church, Virginia; four brothers, William Duncan of Melfa, Virginia, John Duncan of Wachapreague, Virginia, James (Laura) Smith of Painter, Virginia, and Louis (Rosa) Duncan of Horntown, Virginia; two godsons, Nicholas and Dennean Rogers of Belle Haven, Virginia; three special cousins who was raised as Ruby’s siblings, Peggy Giddens, Margaret Turner, and Edward Brooks of Painter, Virginia; cousin/riding buddy, Denise Rogers of Belle Haven, Virginia; best friends, Audrey Robinson, Charlene Riley, Della Giddens, Delores Carten, Sandra Ames, and Charlotte Harmon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
