Obituary

Cordelia Staten, 75, was the daughter of the late Julia Staten and James Mason. She was affectionately reared by the late Bertha and James Robinson. She stepped on God's chariot bound for Glory on the evening hours of Thursday, February 2, 2023.
Cordelia was born in Bayview, Virginia on August 14, 1947. She was educated through the Northampton County Public School System and later received her General Education Diploma. Cordelia worked in agriculture for most of her life and later worked as a laundromat attendant in Cape Charles, VA for several years.
Cordelia started her Christian journey at Coles Chapel AME Church in Bayview, VA and later transferred her membership to First Baptist Church, Capeville, VA where she was a devoted member until her new membership in Glory. During her membership at First Baptist Church, Cordelia devoted her services to many ministries which included: a member of the choir, the advisor for the youth, the culinary ministry and the ministry she held nearest and dearest to her heart-the Pastor's Aide Ministry where she served as President. She will always be remembered for her starring role as "Grandma Bess" in the church's annual Christmas production.
Cordelia loved going to bingo and waiting with eager anticipation for her winning number to come out. She could often be found faithfully watching her favorite games shows: The Price Is Right and Family Feud.
Cordelia had a faithfulness to God and undying love for her Pastor whom she loved without question and supported unequivocally. However, her most endearing quality was her love for her family and instilling in them the principles of life that would ensure their success. When her children were young, she insisted they were in church every Sunday! She and Mother Pasty Jones made sure they were three of many in Bayview that were packed in that tiny Ford Falcon. Shinekia, DeShera and Carnell were later added to that number when they came along. She constantly insisted that her children and grandchildren follow life's "Golden Rule." She also wanted her children and grandchildren to do their best educationally and with God's grace and mercy it would yield good fruit.
She leaves memories of love and laughter as well as the strength to carry on her legacy: Children: Daniel W. Staten-Allentown, PA, Cora D. Staten-Norfolk, VA, Terry J. Staten-Savannah, GA, Shinekia S. (Montego, Sr.) Johnson-Cheriton, VA. Grandchildren: DeShera R. (Terrance) Edwards-Chesapeake, VA, Carnell C. (Curstin) Williams, Jr.,-Suffolk, VA, Jordan C. Staten and Montego A. Johnson, Jr. - Cheriton, VA. Great Grandchildren: Liam Williams, Noah Edwards, Madison Williams and Mason Edwards. Goddaughters: Ronica Wynder and Christina Simon. Special Daughter: Vonda Smith. Sister: Adelaide Armstrong, Pennsylvania, Brothers: James (Gwendolyn) Staten-New Smyrna Beach, FL, Melvin Armstrong-Maryland and Perry Armstrong -Accomack. She will be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Cordelia was predeceased by one brother and six sisters.
