Lynwood Albert Turner Obituary
Deacon Lynwood Albert Turner, Sr. the son of the late Edward Turner and Stashia Ellen Harris Turner, was born November 26, 1929 in Northampton County, Virginia. He was educated in the Northampton County School
System where he graduated from Northampton County High School. He was accepted to St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia but due to financial hardships was unable to attend. He departed this life on Saturday, November 29th, 2014 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
His first marriage was to the late Eva Wynder Turner, and from this union was born Lynwood, Jr., Doris and Kathy. He later married the late Evelyn Smaw McCullough Turner.
Deacon Turner was an entrepreneur of the highest order. His industrial genius had it’s origin in early childhood when he took the newspaper route of his older brother Sidney, delivering papers to the residents of Cobb Station. He started his work life in earnest as a laborer for the G.L. Webster Cannery in Cheriton,VA. Through initiative and hard work, he became one of Mr. Webster’s most valued employees, becoming the foreman for the farmland,
gardens and grounds of his private residence. While employed by G.L. Webster, he also grew and sold his own crops that augmented his income for his family.
Deacon Turner’s agricultural acumen caught the attention of many, leading to a job offer from a representative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His dedication to his family and his love of the Eastern Shore led him to decline this offer. He was a hard working man who encouraged his family and friends to do the same. He often said that he just could not sit down and do nothing. He worked the fields of his farm the day he was stricken with a hemorrhagic stroke. “God needed a farmer and he took our dad. “
On the passing of his older sister, Ernie, who was a mother figure, he accepted the responsibility in caring for his disabled brother William. He performed these duties while still working for the Northampton County School District as a bus driver (which he did for 32 years), running a farm and managing a trash collection business.
In spite of his many endeavors, he was deeply devoted and committed to African Baptist Church, where he served for over 50 years as a Deacon. There was not a day in the week that he did not perform some duty for his Deacon Board, Pastor or for the members of the congregation. He was instrumental in keeping the church fully functioning after the passing of long-term Pastor Charles F. Mapp. During the subsequent two years, Deacon Turner formed and led the search committee that was charged with finding a new pastor, which led to the installation of the current Pastor, Robert Garris, Jr.
Deacon Turner was a father figure to not only his grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren but also to many throughout the community. His loss will be deeply felt by the hundreds of people of the Eastern Shore and surrounding areas, who knew and loved him.
Deacon Turner is survived by one son, Lynwood A. Turner, Jr. (Leah) of Williamsburg, VA; Two daughters, Doris Hubbart (William) and Kathy Bailey (Charles) of Cheriton, VA; Two sisters, Ruth Ellen Turner Freeman of
