Henry Lee Martin Jr., fondly known as "Butch," passed away on August 22, 2023, at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and cherished memories. Born on September 8, 1947, to the late Henry Lee Martin Sr, and Bernice Watson in Petersburgh. VA. Butch was a beloved son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His life was a tapestry woven with experiences, connections, and a passion for life that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
After graduating from Peabody High School, Butch embarked on a path of service to his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His commitment and dedication to his duty were exemplary, and he served his nation honorably before being discharged. Butch welcomed his first-born Angela Taylor and shortly after he met Jacquelyn Waters, who was pursuing her education at Virginia State University. Butch and Jacquelyn united in marriage and were blessed with three children – Christopher, Vikki, and Isa. Butch's devotion to his family was unwavering, and his role as a father brought him immeasurable joy. In addition to his immediate family, Butch extended his love to his youngest child Latanya Matthews. He was a man of great heart and compassion.
Tragedy struck in 1994 when he lost his beloved wife, Jacquelyn, but Butch's resilience and strength carried him forward. Later in life, Butch found companionship and happiness with Clara Shields, who became his life partner. Together, they navigated life's journey with steady support and shared experiences. Butch's journey was also enriched by the bonds he shared with his five brothers and seven sisters. Butch's legacy extended to the next generation, with seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild who were fortunate to experience his warmth and love. He was blessed with many nieces, nephews and cousins who all held a special place in his heart.
Beyond his familial roles, Butch was known for his lively spirit and passion for discussing his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. He relished spending time with friends, engaging in animated conversations while enjoying an occasional cocktail. Butch's magnetic personality and infectious laughter drew people close to him, creating a circle of cherished relationships that spanned his lifetime.
Henry Lee Martin Jr., "Butch," touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us remember the joy he brought into our lives and carry forward the lessons he taught us about the power of love, connection, and constant strength.
