Erma Lee Spady Obituary
God called Mrs. Erma L. Spady home on August 17, 2025 after a short illness. Erma was born July 22, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Leroy A. Grimes and Ella Mae Beverly Grimes.
Erma was educated in the Public School System of Northampton County, Virginia and graduated from Northampton County High School.
Erma came to know the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted Him as her personal Savior at an early age at African Baptist Church in Cheriton, Virginia where she continued has a lifelong member until her passing.
Erma was a loving, caring and nurturing mother to her children and grandchildren. She was Momma and NaNa to all that loved and adored her. She had a strong maternal instinct, being the Matriarch and driving force of her family. She tended to the loving care of her mother and father while working full time and managing households in Virginia and New York.
Erma was a dedicated employee with the US Postal Service and won many accommodations for her service in the government. She retired in order to care for her mother, administering peritoneal dialysis to her until her death and caring for her father until his death.
When the county began using zip codes and every street was named or renamed, Cheriton Cross Rd. was renamed to Pat Town Rd. Erma was instrumental in petitioning her neighbors on Cheriton Cross Rd. to successfully having Pat Town Rd changed back to Cheriton Cross Rd. Mary Mitchell worked with her to assist in the process of the court proceedings.
She had a selfless spirit, always thinking of others in her family, her neighbors and her friends. She was dearly loved by everyone.
Erma’s legacy will live on through her children Theresa, Michael, Althea and Keith and her grandchildren, Chaunte, Michael Spady, Jr. (Mikey), and Lisa, her great grandchild Ethan, her nephews Victor and Matthew Grimes, her cousins Ruth Whitson, Stafford and Maurice Claud, “adopted” daughter Larise Wynn and a host of other relatives and dear friends. Erma was preceded in death by her sister Mary Perry, her brother Leroy Grimes, her sister in law Mazelle Grimes, and her niece Sabrina Grimes. Erma loved all and all loved her. Precious, precious memories! Rest in Eternal Peace our Beloved Erma.
