Sgt. Verline Leroy Jones was born July 22, 1918 to the late Ethel Jones and the late Bernard Jones in Northampton County, Virginia. Verline was called home on January 20, 2019.
Sgt. Verline was educated in the Northampton County School System. At a young age she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Verline resided in South Philadelphia for a moment then returned to Virginia with her family. She obtained her first job working in her Uncle Ira Jones's corner store. Fulfilling her dream, she joined the United States Air Force (WAF) and became one the of 332nd fighters wing. While in the air force she befriended Chappie James who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, as a life long friend. Verline took positions as front desk administrator and part time chorus girl.
After 32 years of working and traveling all over East Asia she retired. Returning home she attended Eastern Shore Community College majoring in business. Also upon her return home, she joined Mt. Zion A.M.E and later became a member of Shorter's Chapel. Verline was a faithful servant to the Lord and her church. She became the Sunday school teacher. She trusted the Lord to work many wonders in her life.
Verline loved reminiscing about her time overseas with her family and friends. She loved traveling with her sisters and family to visit her nieces and nephews in Fort Washington, Maryland during the Thanksgiving Holiday. She frequently traveled back and forth to Florida with her nephew. Verline loved going to McDonalds with Wynita to sit, talk, and drink black coffee. Her best days were getting out of the house with family and friends; shopping at the local stores, her favorite was Walmart. She would stay in for hours and come out still ready to go for more saying "where we going next?" Verline enjoyed dinners out with family and friends, sipping on her favorite cocktail.
Verline leaves to cherish her precious memories; 1 sister: Ethel Cleo Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Verline was a loving, selfless, providing aunt, friend, and advisor. Her smile and laugh will remain with us a lifetime. Her legacy shall live on through her family.
Sorrowfully Submitted,
The Family
